Janet Wize was eager to get home. She wanted to lay her hands on the new granite counter tops she had just installed.
She liked her home. And crossing the park was the fastest way there, even at night. It was usually a nice safe neighborhood up above Noe Valley, so she didn't worry.
She giggled a bit passing the tall bronze statue of Miguel Hidalgo. He was the great hero of Mexican independence, sure, but would her two bedroom flat be worth 1.6 million dollars if it were still in Mexico, even with newly refinished hardwood floors and stainless steel appliances? She thought not.
She started up the steps, climbing the bridge over the tracks. The hills got steeper here but she just sped up. This close to home the American Dream practically filled her bloodstream with delight. Soon she would be in her very own home.
And that was when the fangs sank into her neck.
