Ok...mine would be Dawn. The key didn't have to evolve into any physical form.

Illyria was a powerful nation in the Balkans by the 4th century BC. "Dawn" is an English word with Germanic/Scandinavian roots, which I suppose makes it no more than 1000 years old, tops. Illyria is older.

On the other hand, the Bible mentions dawn in the OT and Illyria doesn't show up until St Paul, so it depends on your view of that book, I suppose. ;-)

Seriously, Illyria. If only because Dawn's ancientness is from another dimension (Glory ruled a hell dimension) and Illyria belongs to this world. More or less.

Also, because Illyria was Illyria that whole time. The Key existed a long time before Dawn, but it wasn't Dawn.

I was going to initially go with a quick Illyria, if for no other reason than she at least remembers her past. But as to actual length of existence... that's a complicated question.

Did the dimensions and the stuff in them (like Illyria) come first or did the Key to breaking down the dimensions come first? Chicken? Egg? I'm going to go with the key for no particular reason.

Is there any reference to the Key existing much before the 12th century AD when the Monks of Dagon were founded? (And presumably the Knights of Byzantium at about the same time.) Presumably whenever Glory was exiled from her hell dimension, the key was created to lock the door and stop her coming back.

DAWN: So this ... key thing ... it's been around for a long time?
GLORY: Well, not as long as me, but ... yeah. Just this side of forever.

Sounds to me like saying that the key was around since the beginning of time, the creation of the Gods. That it wasn't created just when Glory was expelled from her Hell dimension.

Yes, but Glory isn't exactly Miss Attention Span. To her, "just this side of forever" might mean "last week". ;-)

Illyria. Regardless of what power lies (dormant) inside of Dawn, she doesn't remember what the crap it was like being a shapeless form of green energy. Dawn has that old ass energy inside of her, yes, but she isn't the older than dirt green energy alone. Dawn the human is only as old from the time she was made, which was sometime during the beginning of season five. Of course it's Illyria :P
