Joss and feminism|
Another point of view
No Season 8 discussion.
That's 'cause S8 blows Joss out of the water on the feminism front.
I found both "essays" ("rants" is more accurate) deeply lacking. Both, in form/style and content/subject matter.
There really is no reason to discuss them at length.
(And oh! hai infinitewhale - why, of course you are correct. ;-))
There seems to be a great (and understandable) reluctance to accept S8 into academia. Not that either article is really academic, but you get the point.
It's probable the first article doesn't know they exist or they'd have used to them to confirm some of their points. Joss doesn't see Buffy as a feminist character (at least the comic version), so you'd be hard-pressed to argue otherwise if you take them into account.

People of considered judgement are reluctant to take S8 seriously at all. And it is very understandable. It's pleasing to remember that most people interested in the show have never heard and will never hear about it.
I was mostly pleased to note that there is still active controversy going on outside Eljay in 2011. These two posts appear to have been made in the past few days, one in response to the other, and been linked from some non-fandom sites.
Maybe there's just nothing on teevee.
Oh! I knew that...
I'm just grateful neither article mentions Spike.
